- Clonal Propagation of some Bamboo Species through Adventitious Rhizogenesis in Culm Cuttings

With a view to evolve cloning procedure for Bambusa multiplex, Bambusa tulda and Bambusa vulgaris single node culm cuttings were subjected to four different treatments for 24h viz., water, or 1, 2 and 4 mM NAA. The treated cuttings were horizontally placed and covered completely with sand in ground beds of low-cost mist chamber. After two months, the cuttings were scored for adventitious ischolar_maining percentage, ischolar_main number and length. Significant influence of graded concentrations of NAA on adventitious rhizogenesis was observed. In B. tulda and B. vulgaris the treatment of 4 mM NAA to culm cuttings proved superior for ischolar_main induction while 2mM was found best for ischolar_maining in B. multiplex.- Variation in Rooting Response of Different Clones of Casuarina equisetifolia

The ischolar_maining response of 20 different clones of Casuarina equisetifolia under different concentrations of Indole Butyric Acid (IBA) was studied in a factorial RBD experiment. Significant variations in ischolar_maining per cent and number of ischolar_mains were recorded among the different clones, treatments and their interactions. The variations observed in ischolar_main length were significant among the clones only and non-significant among treatments and clone-treatment interaction. The treatment IBA 4000 ppm performcd the best for all the parameters studied. The treatment increased ischolar_maining by 88.38% and number of ischolar_mains per cladode by 73.33% over control. The findings indicate the importance of including ischolar_maining ability of a clone (genotype) as an important criterion for its selection and evaluation.- Rooting Response of Semi-hardwood Shoot Cuttings of Grewia optiva and Lagerstroemia parviflora

Adventitious rhizogenesis in semi-hardwood shoot cuttings of two 'ischolar_maining recalcitrant' forestry species, Grewia optiva and Lagerstroemia parviflora was investigated. The cuttings of approximately 20 cm length and 1.0 cm diameter were treated with equimolar (2mM) doses of indole 3-butyric acid, sodium acetate, ascorbic acid and thiamine for 24 h by basal dipping. After ten weeks of planting, observations were recorded for sprouting (%), ischolar_maining (%), ischolar_main number, and ischolar_main length and ischolar_main-sprout ratio. Treatment with IBA significantly induced adventitious ischolar_maining (upto 67%) in Grewia optiva. In Lagerstroemia parviflora, treatment of thiamine resulted in significantly better adventitious rhizogenesis than other treatments.- Conservation of a Rare and Threatened Species Capparis Cartilaginea Decne. The ischolar_maining response of ten indigenous provenances of Azadirachta indica under the effect of different treatments viz., IAA, IBA and Thiamine was studied in a factorial RBD experiment. Signifiant variations in almost all parameters were recorded among the different provenances, treatments and their interactions. The treatment IBA 1000 ppm performed the best for all the parameters studied. The treatment increased ischolar_maining by 85.5%, number of ischolar_mains per cuttings by 240.8%, maximum ischolar_main length by 68% and ischolar_main dry wt. by 218.7% over control. The provenance Mandore, Rajasthan (P9) showed overall best ischolar_maining response with 64.17% ischolar_maining, 9.64 number of ischolar_mains per cutting, 6.15 em maximum ischolar_main length and 0.075% gmIcutting ischolar_main dry wt. The interaction of provenance Midnapur, West Bengal (P5) with treatment IBA 1000 ppm (T3) gave best results in respect of number of ischolar_mains per cutting (17.67), maximum ischolar_main length (7.61 cm) and ischolar_main dry weight (0.163 gm/cutting). However, the provenance Dodaballapur, Karnataka (P10) with treatment IBA 1000 ppm (T3) gave the maximum ischolar_maining (96.67%). Carbon sequestration has been suggested as a means to help mitigate the increase in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. Silvipastoral systems can better sequester carbon in soil and biomass and help to improve soil conditions. In the present study, carbon sequestration was quantified both in biomass and soil in two pasture systems (Cenchrus ciliaris and Cenchrus setegerus), two tree systems (Acacia tortilis and Azadirachta indica) and four silvipastoral system (combination of one tree and on grass) in arid northwestern India. The silvipastoral system sequestered 36.3% to 60.0% more total soil organic carbon stock compared to the tree system and 27.1-70.8% more in comparison to the pasture system. The soil organic carbon and net carbon sequestered were greater in the silvipastoral system. Thus, silvipastoral system involving trees and grasses can help in better sequestration of atmospheric system compared with systems containing only trees or pasture.Keywords
